remember the Code Talkers? Whose Diné language ended a world war… how are we to honor them?

by not remaining silent in the midst of the war they now face and by advocating with and partnering with them in loving service, this is how we honor them.

you want to honor those who lost their lives in service of this land? honor the Diné who served and serve and who now have been left ravaged and outcast by a virus that came to them through no fault of their own, but through the denial of its existence by the same people who deny the Diné’s (and any Indigenous community’s) existence.

it is time to stand up and speak out in solidarity with our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

you can do your part in this time by:

  • donating to organizations working to alleviate the strain on Indigenous communities through increased access to testing and healthcare, food delivery, medical supplies delivery, ensuring access to clean water, adequate housing, etc.
  • making masks, volunteering time at organizations who are doing this work (if it is safe for you to do so), sending food goods and cleaning supplies
  • submitting comments and speaking out against rollbacks on protections of Indigenous and sacred lands (appallingly happening during this pandemic)
  • most importantly, stay home and save lives. yes, even over, especially over, memorial day weekend. stop the spread! do your part in this viral war!

a veterans memorial rests here at the base of Tségháhoodzání (Window Rock), remembering the Code Talkers whose language ended a world war… how are we to honor them?
